Jewel

Jewel- Small

Her fires smouldering away,

Burnt my heart to a tender crisp,

She had been as fast as a bush fire,

Rushing through my life at an incredible pace,

Leaving only the ashes that were my love for her,

Time was small and she was big on moving,

Her whole journey was only to find more fuel,

More scrub to burn amongst the tender dry outback,

And I was all but a young thin shoot sprouting from the dirt,

With barely a few green leaves to my name,

My roots firmly entrenched deep into the soil,

Creeping inch by inch, day by day on the desperate hunt for a drop of moisture,

To satisfy my thirst,

Then on a clear mid summer night

She came racing towards me,

My saviour, yet I could hear all the screams of the wood in the distance,

Giving up their fights, to hiss and crackle away under her appetite,

She had stood before me briefly,

The wind blowing her flame back,

Small packets of yellow and orange escaping into the distance,

I had pleaded with her to go around me and spare my fragile life,

She had looked down upon me from the great wall that was body,

And laughed with all her might,

I was only another piece of deadwood for her to consume.

With one great stride she fought against that wind,

And ate right through my heart,

Burning it to the crisp,

Leaving a jewel amongst my ashes where once my light green leaves flew,

In the free airs of the bush,

While her flame raged onwards,

Flying over the ground to where ever the food took her,

She, being determined not to be extinguished.
